Stainless Steel Swedish Fids
Stainless steel fids have a wooden top attached with a screw to add extra strength and rigidity. The Swedish fid is a great tool for opening the plaited cover/strands of all ropes and the use of splicing 3 strand, 4 strand and 8 plait ( multiplait ) ropes. These fids help greatly when trying to splice tight stranded ropes, instead of trying to pull them open with your hands. A rope splicing fid also opens the strand wide enough for you to easily put your tucks in.

Roy Davis Excellent Fid which is very well made, would not have been able to hitch a Long Fender for the stern of our Narrowboat without it. Unfortunately because it was my first time doing a fender of this type I hitched it very tightly resulting in me having to hammer the Fid through the hitches, its taken a few hundred blows without issue.
