FAQ's

When making bannister ropes we measure from the inside of each man rope knot. You will need to take this into consideration when measuring. Each Knot is roughly 7cm (3 Inches)

It is advisable that wooden mounts are used with all handrail brackets to add extra strength to the fitting.

For a corner you would have a bracket about 6 to 8 inches away from the wall each end.

If you would like add a drape to your bannister we would recommend adding between 5% and 10% to the total length of the Rope.

We recommend using one bracket every metre.

Installation

IT IS ADVISABLE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THESE INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO INSTALLATION

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOUR BANNISTER ROPE IS SECURELY FIXED TO THE WALL – PLEASE BE SURE TO KNOW THE TYPE OF WALL IT IS BEING ATTACHED TOO.

When securing the brackets onto the rope at your chosen spaces, it is advisable to make a pilot hole through the rope with a tapered ended tool such as a Pozi / Philips screwdriver, this will enable the screw to drive straighter to the bracket shaft. A small amount of manoeuvring should be expected.

1 – PLACEMENT OF THE ROPE  Hold the rope in position and mark where the fixings are to be attached (wooden mounts/handrail brackets). Bear in mind that the natural drape of the rope (approx 5%) will show over the first to second month after installation.

2 – ATTACHING HANDRAIL BRACKET MOUNTS – ROPESERVICES UK recommends that hardwood mounts are used with each bracket and can be supplied by us with your rope.

Our mounts are pre-drilled to suit a no 10 countersunk screw but if larger screws are to be used you must re-drill the holes to stop the wood from splitting.

Please make sure that you use the correct length of screw to suit the job – it is recommended that a 2 1/2″ (60mm) screw is generally sufficient but you must make sure that it has penetrated the well beyond the plaster and into the solid bricks or stone.

Align the holes in the mounts to run in line with rope this will enable the bracket screws to avoid the steel screws when fixing.

If drilling through dry lined or plaster boarded walls, it is recommended that extra precaution is taken because of the gaps behind the boards, some sort of infill or reinforcement may be required.

Before fixing the mounts into position. you can stain, seal, polish or paint them or they can be left in their natural state.

3 – ATTACHING HANDRAIL BRACKETS TO THE MOUNTS – use the screws provided (4 per brackets)

If fixing brackets directly to walls without the mounts, suitable screws will be needed as the screws supplied are only suitable for the mounts attachments.

Before screwing into position, make sure the steel screw heads are covered and the bracket holes avoid them. Form pilot holes in the mounts with a fine drill to avoid splitting the timber.

IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT ANY ASPECT OF ATTACHING THE MOUNTS AND BRACKETS, WE STRONGLY ADVISE YOU SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE FROM A COMPETENT JOINER OR BUILDER.

  4. James Arkell (verified owner)

The rope bannister looks fabulous and is effective. The screws were shonky as a couple were wrong size or the powder coating damaged the thread so used my own and dabbed the head with black enamel.

  5. Simon Hickman (verified owner)

A beautifully made rope bannister that looks wonderful ! I’m very happy – Recommended.

  6. Neil Sutcliffe (verified owner)

Lovely rope, brackets are also great, delivered quickly and most importantly looks great once installed. We used a strip of oak to mount on rather than the individual mount so I can’t comment on those.

  7. caron townsend

Questions and answers of the customers

Good afternoon, I would require 4m of rope which would require a bend roughly half way. I estimate that I would need 6 brackets. Do any brackets come included in the price or will I need to order 6 using the field on the order sheet online? Thanks in advance, Martyn

  2. Hi there, I am looking at buying the hemp bannister rope. I have a couple of questions: - Does the length include the knots? I need to fill a 4.2 metre space. Do I order 4.2 metres length or should I go slightly shorter to allow space for the knots? - I don't plan on having a droop. How many wall fittings would you recommend? I need to round one corner, so presumably I'll need one on each side of the corner. Length is 3 metres before the corner and 1.2 metres after. Thanks in advance, Alex

A Hi, Thank you for your question. All our bannister ropes are measured from behind the knot to behind the knot, we do not take the knots into to consideration when measuring. You are correct in think that you will need a fittings each side of the corner. We recommend using a fitting every 1 metre. On the 3 metre length you would need one fitting behind the knot, one fitting at the corner and another fitting in the middle. For the short 1.2 metre you could get away with 2 fittings, one at the corner and one behind the knot. It would be personal preference if you were to have another fitting in the middle of this length. All bannister ropes will come with the fittings behind the knots fitted in place with all other fittings left loose so you can fit them in your desired location. Regards RopeServices UK
